One question families with toddlers often ask is how to prepare their child for their first visit to the dentist. Every child is different, from very scared to very excited and everything in between. Going to a dentist for the first time is a new experience for kids, and while no two kids are alike, here are a few ideas of things you can try to get your child as ready as they can be for their first visit:
- Role playing the dentist visit at home: You can pretend being the dentist and then have them pretend being the dentist,
- Let them try brushing your teeth,
- Have them open their mouth while you take the handle part of their tooth brush and use it to tap and count each tooth while they open wide,
- Let them know about the special ride they are going to get in the dentist chair,
- Teach them the names of each tooth,
- Have them practice opening their mouths and saying a big “AAAAA”
During the first visit, our primary goal will be to make the experience as fun and engaging as possible, and help take away any fears they may have. If you have any questions about your first visit, please feel free to call us at (416) 922-2668.
